Purchased a package deal through Pleasant Holiday and stayed at The Outrigger Spa & Resort - Kona
It's about 220 miles around the island
Below are things I planned for our magical trip:
Hapuna Beach State Park - one of the world’s iconic beaches, ½ mile of white sand; Black sand beaches - one main one is near the volcano N.P. but there are many other black sand beaches (stopped at the two step snorkeling place and encountered it near the boat ramp small beach area; The green sand beach -is near South Point; Kona Manta Rays - I saw at The Outrigger Resort and Spa viewing area after waiting 2 1/2 hours -magnificient- so 9p-10p is the time; Famous Waterfalls: Rainbow Falls (awesome) - free; Hakaka Falls - short hike - small paid parking lot ½ mile loop thru the rainforest; Greenwell Farms (Coffee) - no reservation required and very informative; Whale watching - best Marine type safari really following mamma whale and her baby etc.; Kona Cloud Forest - scenes of Avatar II; Hawaii Volcanoes National Park home to Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes -Head to Kilauea Visitor Center and get a map at the gate; hike along old lava fields & and view the steaming lava flow -Crater Rim road stopping at viewpoints for the Kilauea Caldera;-choose short easy hikes - steam banks trail through steam vents, bird park trail through rainforest and flora for the area, and Thurston Lava tubes (day trip) Thurston Lava Tube and the Jaggar Museum; Painted Church: St. Benedict Catholic Church also known as the Painted Church since 1842 (peaceful and beautiful overlooking the ocean); Hilo Bay and Lili uokalani Park and Garden
Food: Ate at the Outrigger;Wailele Café restaurant every day overlooking the ocean
Dream Bakery in Kona - similar to Punalu Bakery - no ambieance; Taco Tita - picnic table outside near Punalu Bakery sweet bread and masaladas; Hilo Bay Café has fantastic views and delicious food; The Fish Hopper in Kailua-Kona is also a great option, with seafood and an oceanfront location.
What to wear - Casual chic:
bathing suits; Coverups; Volcano outfit for hiking volcano with sneakers; shorts; tops to match; Kaftan or flowy dress and dinner outfit; Hawaiian shirt and outfits and flowers; Raincoats; outfit for plane; jewelry for outfits; beach slippers, sneakers, and shoes, undergarments, socks, and sleepwear; essential toiletries; hat; comfy tennis shoes for hiking, sandals; mosquito repellent (did not use): sunscreen, cute beach bag, sunhats; cords for phones, computers; water shoes; umbrellas
Maui maybe 2020: Road to Hana, Haleakala National Forest (dormant volcano), Makena Beach, Kaanapali Beach, L. Luau; O'o farm: Lahaina Banyan Tree Court Park; Lavender Farm! Rented a condo in Maui -
Fun, sun, white sand, warm ocean, snorkel, swim, delish food (living the life)!
It has always been so much fun traveling to Oahu since the early '90s with the family; Oahu: Diamond Head; enjoyed walking on the white sand and swimming in the beautiful turquoise blue water; Pearl Harbor Tour; Waimea Beach; Polynesian Cultural Center; Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve; submarine, etc.
